Deciding when to close school:
The Township superintendents meet collectively to decide on whether or not to close campuses, considering a number of factors:
Safety: First and foremost, we want to make sure it is safe to come to school. Road and travel conditions factor into our decision along with weather forecasts.
Operations: We test our buildings’ heating systems, make sure snow can be cleared, and contact our transportation providers to assure bus routes can run.
Alignment where possible across township: Township superintendents work to make a joint decision when possible, recognizing that not all districts have the same operational resources.
Communicating with staff and families:
The Township superintendents review conditions together either late in the evening before predicted weather or early in the morning on the day of predicted weather. If it becomes necessary to close school, we will make and communicate that decision by 5 a.m. through Blackboard via phone, email, and text message. We will also update the website and social media.
Please remember that on days when winter weather is predicted, unless you hear otherwise, school will be in session.
Per Board direction, the first winter weather emergency day of a school year will be used as a snow day, making up the day at the end of the school year. Any subsequent weather emergency days will be used as a remote learning day.
